If you've just ordered an EV — or you're thinking about one — the first question is usually the same: "how much is this charger going to cost me, properly fitted?"

Most of the prices you'll see online are either deliberately vague ("from £799!") or heavily inflated by national installers who quote high then rely on you not getting a second quote. As a Fareham-based NAPIT approved installer doing this work week-in week-out, here's what real Hampshire installs actually cost in 2026.

If a quote doesn't list these clearly, ask. Some installers leave certification or earth protection off the headline price and add them later.

What pushes the cost up?

Cable run length

This is the biggest single factor. A garage on the same wall as your consumer unit might be a 2-metre cable run. A detached garage at the bottom of a long drive can be 30 metres — and that cable isn't cheap, especially in 2026. Every extra 10 metres typically adds £80–£150 to a quote.

Consumer unit condition

If your consumer unit is full, ancient, or doesn't have the right protection, your installer might need to add a separate enclosure or — in some cases — recommend a full consumer unit upgrade. A fuseboard upgrade is around £450–£650 on its own, so worth knowing about up front.

Earth protection

Most UK homes have what's called a TN-C-S earth, which can't always be safely used for outdoor EV charging without additional protection. The fix is usually either an earth rod and matrix, or a charger with built-in PEN fault detection (most modern units have this — Zappi, Ohme, Wallbox Pulsar, Hypervolt etc.).

The questions to ask any installer

I'd ask all of these before signing anything:

  1. "Are you Level 3 EV charger qualified?" — There's a specific qualification for this. Many electricians fit chargers without it.
  2. "Are you registered with a Part P scheme?" — NAPIT, NICEIC, ELECSA. Without this, the work isn't legally notifiable and you'll have problems selling the house.
  3. "Is the price fully inclusive of certification?" — Get this in writing.
  4. "What earth protection do you fit?" — A pro will explain TN-C-S, PEN faults and either a matrix earth or charger-integrated protection.
  5. "Will you give me an EIC and notify it?" — Electrical Installation Certificate is non-negotiable. Notification through NAPIT or similar takes care of building control.

An honest take

If you get a quote significantly under £800 fully fitted, look very carefully at what's been left out. And if you get a quote over £1,500 for a standard install with no complications, you're being overcharged. Hampshire's a competitive market — get two or three quotes and ask each installer to explain the line items.
